Nature and literature in Copenhagen!
Copenhagen, Denmark's capital from 15th century, is an important stage for world literature. It is also the seventh most expensive city in the world. Maybe you think it would be a problem to find a n affordable hotel in Copenhagen, but it is not. If you love literature and nature, Copenhagen holiday is perfect option for you.
The name Copenhagen describes the history of the city: the name means "merchants' harbour". In fact, with its harbour, Copenhagen was an important trade centre, but nowadays it is mostly used for leisure and tourism, for example to boat cruises. Thanks to the proximity of the ocean, the winters are not very cold and the temperatures rarely stay under the zero. On the other hand, the summers are not that warm and the average temperature is only around 17,5 C.
Copenhagen's importance was proved, not only because of the harbour but also due to the Knonbor Castle, which is the former residence of a king. It was built in 1420 in a strategic position near the sea and from 1739 to 1900 it was used as a prison. Since the year 2000, it has been under UNESCO's protection. The history of Knonbor Castle inspired William Shakespeare. His most important masterpiece, Hamlet, is placed in this castle, because the story is about Danish king. Imagine yourself into the story of Hamlet and relive it in this castle.
Copenhagen's modern symbol is also from literature: The Little Mermaid Statue sits on a rock in front of the harbour. It was built in 1909 under Carl Jacobsen's commission, because he fell in love with the ballet adapted from the homonymous fable written by Hans Christian Andersen. When I was a child my mother read me this story and I knew about this statue. I thought that the statue would be tall like a model, but it is only 1,2 metres high. Unfortunately The Little Mermaid has been a subject to vandalism acts more than once. Due to these acts, it was replaced with the bronzen one. The Statue will be the Danish symbol in Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.
Copenhagen is also a city for people who appreciate nature. It is an environmental friendly town: 32% of people go to work by bicycle which is enabled by numerous bicycle paths. There are also a lot of botanical gardens and parks, where you can spend your free time. This love for nature is also represented by Copenhagen Zoo, founded in 1859. It is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. It is special, because you can find an endangered species: Tasmanian Devils.
If you like nature and literature, Copenhagen is the place to visit for you. Search a comfortable Copenhagen hotel and visit this beautiful city.
